How much homework will my child have?

Your child will have a reasonable amount of homework each night but never
over the weekend, unless projects have been assigned. It is important to
check their assignment planner daily. If it is taking your child a long
time to finish, then we should discuss some strategies to help them.

A homework log goes home at the beginning of the week, and I will email it
to any parents that get me their email address. It list the work that will
be assigned for the week at hand. I try to stay as close to this as
possible, but occasionally, I will add or delete from the log. So if your
child says "Mr. Munoz said we didn't have to do that." - they are probably
right.

Do you like to have volunteers in your classroom?

Absolutely. I think it's great when parents take an active interest in
their child's education. Please let me know if you are available to help
out. I will certainly be in contact when I need assistance. You can apply
any time helping out toward your parent participation hours.

We are going to be out of town, what should we do?

You need let me know as far in advance as possible. That way I will have
time to put together work for you child to do. I will write up the work
that your child will be responsible for when they are absent. They should
be prepared to turn it into me after they return to school. Failure to do
so will affect their grades.

Do the parents need to attend 1st Friday mass?

No, but they are always welcome. Mass is at 8:00 am and is generally a
hour. Additionally, any Holy Days of Obligation that occur during the week
are observed, so it is an excellent way to observe the Holy Days, mass times
are the same.

What about birthdays?

If your child has birthday during school, I am fine with you bringing in
cupcakes or donuts for the class. Plan on 20 students. I prefer not to
have drinks, since it can be messy.

What if my child is sick?

I give students 1 school day for each day they have absent to make up the
missed work. I will have a sheet printed out for each day that they have
missed. On this page it will give the pages they need to read, the
assignments they have to make up, and any work that we corrected and turned
in. If you child is out for a long term illness, please call me so we can
discuss a plan of action.

If you are unsure, feel free to get a hold of me.

How are field trips handled?

I generally plan 2 field trips during the year. When the times get near, I
will send home a note and/or an email about it. Parents are welcome to
come, but space is always limited, therefore I take parents on a first come
basis. Additionally, while it is nice to have both parents or other
relatives go, it doesn't allow for another student's parent to join us. So
please, only one parent per child.

There generally is a cost for the bus, usually around $30-$40, depending on
where we are headed. The cost is based on the number of students, since any
parents going will be considered chaperones and helping out. It is a good
way to earn your volunteer hours.

How is classroom discipline handled?

I use a modified money system in my class. The students can earn "Munoz
Moolah" for positive behavior, good participation, excellent test scores,
etc. They can use this money to buy little knick knacks, pencils, pens,
homework passes, etc. We also have classroom auctions for time to time.

In the case of negative behavior, I have a list of rules spelled out and
posted on the wall. These rules will be handed out at Back to School Night.

I try to be as proactive as possible, addressing problems at the beginning.
If I feel that there is a problem with your child behaviorally or
academically I will be in contact either by note, email, or phone call.
