Expectations and Grading

Procedures

Religion:

The theme, for the year is that each person is a special gift from God.

The objectives are:

1. The children will recognize that God is the creator of all things.

2. The children will celebrate and enjoy God's creation.

3. The children will understand that through relationships we learn about ourselves    and the world.

4. The children will recognize that we are members of God's family.

Math:

The objectives for the year are:

1. The children will develop a conceptual understanding of numbers as well as the relationship between them.

2. The children will use critical thinking, mental math, and logical reasoning to solve problems.

3. The children will use measurement and geometry to connect students to the practical uses of math.

4. The children will understand different ways to collect, display, and analyze data in order to enable them to make inferences and predictions.

Reading and Writing:

The objectives for the year are:

1. The children will know about letters, words, and sounds and how to apply their knowledge to read simple sentences.

2. The children will identify the basic facts and ideas in what they have read, heard, or viewed.

3. The children will listen and respond to stories based on well-known characters, themes, plots, and settings.

4. The children will write words and brief sentences that  are legible.

5. The children will deliver brief recitations and oral presentations about familiar experiences or interests.

Science:

The objectives for the year are:

1. The children will learn that properties of materials can be observed, measured, and predicted.

2. The children will learn that different types of plants and animals inhabit the Earth.

3. The children will know that the Earth is composed of land, air, and water.

4. The children will understand that scientific progress is made by asking meaningful questions and conducting careful investigations.

Social Studies:

The objectives for the year are: 1. The children will demonstrate an understanding that being a good citizen involves acting in certain ways.

2. The children will match simple descriptions of work that people do and the names of those jobs with examples from the school, local community, and historical accounts.

3. The children will compare and contrast the locations of people, places, and environments and describe the human and physical characteristics.

Grading Procedures:

Kindergarten "grades" are based on classroom observations, class work, assessments, and homework. They will receive 2-3 progress reports during the year to let you know how your child is doing in the middle of the trimester. Report cards are sent home after each trimester and they consist of number "grades" for the subject areas, and +/- for social development.
